2015-16 School Lunch Program Update

SRVUSD is committed to providing fresh, nutritious breakfast and lunch options for our students. All meals, food and beverages sold and served at all schools meet state and federal requirements which are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines. We aim to do the best we can to offer affordable yet tasty meals that provide our students with the nutrients they need to be healthy individuals. 

 

For the 2015-2016 school year, we will be raising breakfast prices by .25 cents and lunch by .75 cents as part of our ongoing efforts to offer meals that both appeal to students and offer great nutritional value. Meal prices for 2015-2016 will be as follows:

 

Breakfast -- $2.50

Lunch -- $4.25 or $4.75

 

What makes our meals so nutritious? In addition to all items now being whole grain, here's a sample of the steps we have taken to make our meals better.

SRVUSD Annual Update Fall 2015

Each fall, San Ramon Valley Unified parents are asked to complete an online “Annual Update” to verify household and emergency contact information and complete the annual release acknowledgement and permission requirements.

 

Don’t remember your user name or password?  Did you set up your security questions and options?  If so, you can recover this yourself.  If not, please send an email to portalhelp@srvusd.net to have them help you out!  Do this now to avoid delays in August!

 

Don’t have a portal account yet?  Contact your student’s school office after August 4 to receive your unique user key to set up an account.  It’s fast and easy.

 

For the 2015-2016 school year, to assist the online program in running smoothly, the parent portal will open on a different day in August for each high school and its feeder middle and elementary schools. Please note: parents do not need to fill out the annual update on the day that the portal opens. Parents will have until the first day of school, Tuesday, August 25, 2015, to fill out the information.

 

Parents will receive a message in their Parent Portal with a link to begin the Annual Update process on the following dates:

2016-2017 Instructional Calendar Exploration

The San Ramon Valley Unified School District is exploring ending the 1st semester prior to the winter break, which would shift the school year to start one week earlier in August. Over the years, numerous parents, staff and students have expressed interest in this change in order to provide a mid-year winter break, free from homework and studying.

 

The discussion is focused on the instructional calendar for 2016-2017 and beyond. While this shift would not have as great of an impact on the trimester system at the elementary schools, it would impact SRVUSD current elementary students as they matriculate to middle school and beyond.

 

In 2015, the Board of Education directed District staff to form a Calendar Committee comprised of SRVUSD stakeholders to analyze the costs and benefits and the community’s interest in this change. The Committee put out a community survey and a middle and high school student survey to gain further understanding of the interest in ending the first semester prior to winter break. Based on that input, a draft calendar was developed and refined. Since any change to a calendar must be bargained, this draft calendar is now being discussed with the District’s employee groups and is subject to change as part of that process.

 

Once an agreement is reached, a bargained draft calendar will be shared again with the public who will have an opportunity to again provide input.

Background

The impetus for the exploration is driven solely by the desire to do what is in the best interest for students. While SRVUSD wants our students to achieve academic success, we also want them to be healthy, happy and well-rounded. For several years, there have been informal conversations among parents, staff and students about changing the calendar to provide students (especially at high school) a winter break free from homework, projects and assignments, as most colleges and universities do. About a year ago, the Board of Education directed District administration to form a Calendar Committee to explore the community’s interests, and the impact of possibly ending the first semester prior to winter break. The committee met several times over a year, gathered input from their respective organizations or communities and studied the results of the surveys to parents and students. From that process, the committee developed the current draft calendar that is now being explored by the District’s employee bargaining units.

Since sending out the draft calendar to all community members SRVUSD has received feedback in support and in opposition to the changes.

 

Next Steps 

Over the coming weeks and months, the District hopes to complete the collective bargaining work with our respective union groups regarding this possible change in the calendar. SRVUSD will share the draft calendar that comes out of the bargaining process with stakeholders, continuing to seek feedback, prior to taking it to the Board of Education for action.
